The Nigerian Press Council was established by Decree No. 85 of 1992 to promote high professional standards for the Nigerian Press and to treat all complaints received from the public about the conduct of journalists in their professional capacity as well as arbitrate on complaints made by the Press about the conduct of persons or organisations towards the media. The Nigerian Press Council was inaugurated on December 29, 1992 as a result of the consensus reached by stakeholders, on its enabling law, Nigerian Press Council Decree No. 85 of 1992. The stakeholders who are statutorily members of the board include:-
Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)
Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE)
Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN);
